The “Convert to task” feature in the project notes is one of my favorite Everdo features. I plan a project in the notes, list the steps as lines starting with a dash, and convert them all to tasks in one go. This saves a lot of time. And it is especially useful since I started to use AI to help me make outstanding task-lists for my projects.
One thing breaks my workflow, though: the new tasks are sorted alphabetically instead of keeping the order I wrote them in.
Steps to reproduce
- Open a project and add these lines to the notes:
- Request start date from the manager
- Order the laptop
- Set up the user account
- Use “Convert to task”.
- The tasks appear in alphabetical order (“Order…”, “Request…”, “Set up…”) instead of the written order.
Why this matters
When I write a project plan, the order is deliberate. Steps depend on each other: I need the requirements before I order hardware, and the hardware before I set it up. This is especially important for sequential projects, where the first task becomes the next action. After converting, I have to reorder every task by hand, which takes away much of the time saved.
Proposed solution
Any of these would solve it, in order of my preference:
- Keep the original order by default. In my view, the order the user wrote is almost always the intended one.
- Ask during conversion. A small dialog with “Keep original order” or “Sort alphabetically” (with a “remember my choice” checkbox).
- Global setting. An option in Settings, e.g. “Sort order for converted tasks: original / alphabetical”.
