I’m missing a hot key to create a task after the one I’m currently at. n = in the bottom, shift-n = on top. Some other combo to add a task after the one currently selected would be very useful.

Often I wish ‘n’ would just always behave as you describe, but unfortunately the current implementation is quite far away from this in terms of internal design. So this is a large feature sadly.
Luckily, re-ordering items with keyboard shortcuts helps a little.
yeah, I was going to suggest that but reassigning hotkeys might be confusing to users. I’m used to “vim” with n = row below and N = row above.
Too bad it’s large thing, maybe when you have to refactor in the future.
