Installing desktop app without admin rights

Hi,
I would like to use Everdo on my Windows 7 PC at work. Unfortunately our IT doesn‘t allow to install any software. All apps have to be checked and installed by out IT department. Usually they don‘t install any software which is not our company standard.

So is there any chance I can use Everdo anyway? Maybe a portable version installed on a USB stick?

Thanks

Have you tried using another PC to install it on the USB drive, then running on the target machine? A new database should get created in the user directory, no need for admin permission if I understand correctly.

Sorry to resuscitate an old thread …

For the latest Windows release (1.9.0 at the time of writing), this is how you use it without admin rights:

  • Download installer
  • Extract downloaded .exe file (it is actually a .zip file)
  • You will get a folder with some files. Among those, there is another .zip file.
  • Extract that second zip file to a folder with a meaningful name, for example, “everdo”
  • Run everdo.exe from within “everdo” folder

The data is still stored in the local user’s directory and not in the “everdo” folder, so it isn’t a truly portable installation. Still, I am running this on my company’s computer under IT’s radar.

FYI, the data directory can be customized (example for linux command line)

everdo --dataDir /home/alternativeDirectory

Dear,

Since the message of Dragging3983, the downloaded file is an .exe and not a .zip file (1.9.0 version).

Could someone clarify the methodology to install everdo as a portable version (under IT’s radar).

Thank you !

Yes, the installer is an exe file, but it can be opened by programs that deal with zip files, for example 7-zip.

I’m guessing the problem is that you would still need to somehow install 7-zip.

With 7-zip installed you can open the Everdo installer by right-click → 7-zip → open archive. Then you should be able to follow the steps outlined by by @Dragging3983

Installing on a USB drive using a different computer, then moving to the one you want still works, of course.

You can also try the new Everdo Portable Build which you run directly without installation. It’s not yet available on the main website but will be soon.

Thank you very much, Andrei, for your quick and helpful response!
The portable version solution, which does not require any file manipulation, should meet my needs.
Thanks again.
