Have you considered the following feature?
I set the item to be schedule on a certain date. I click Set Start Date and the calendar opens up. When I hover a date in calendar, it shows me how many items are already scheduled on that day. Or it shows some kind of a heatmap. So I can easily pick a date that has not too many items already scheduled.
